Creating a Google passkey
This short guide is a reference tool to help refresh your knowledge or practise what you have learned in the Creating a Google Passkey online video course.
Step by step
A passkey is a safe and convenient way to sign in to an online account without having to use a password. When you create a passkey for you Google Account, you can sign in with the PIN, fingerprint or facial recognition you use to unlock your phone.
Before you create a passkey on an Android phone, you must:
- be signed in to your Google Account on your phone
- have a screen unlock, such as a PIN, fingerprint or facial recognition, set up on your device.
Fingerprint and facial unlock are safer than a PIN because they can’t be copied or forgotten.
- From the Apps screen, open the Google app.
- Tap your profile icon in the top right.
- Tap Manage your Google Account.
- Tap Security and sign-in.
- Scroll to Passkeys and security keys, then tap Start using passkeys.
- For security, verify your identity using your screen unlock method (for example, your fingerprint).
- When the Passkeys screen appears, tap Use passkeys.
- Once passkey setup is confirmed, tap Done.
- Tap the back arrow to return to Security and sign-in, then scroll to Your devices to view devices that use your Google Account.
- Your Google passkey can automatically synchronise to these devices when using the Chrome browser. This lets you use the PIN, fingerprint or facial scan security you’ve set up on each device to quickly sign in to apps and websites that support passkeys.
Depending on your settings, your Android device may automatically create a Google Account passkey and convert passwords that you saved in the Chrome browser into passkeys.
