Closing unused websites on an Android phone

This short guide is a reference tool to help refresh your knowledge or practise what you have learned in the Closing unused websites on an Android phone online video course. It explains how to find open websites in your browser and close the ones you’re no longer using.

About website tabs

When you browse the internet on your Android phone, each website opens in its own tab, similar to pages in a book.

Closing tabs, or websites, you’re no longer using can improve browser performance and help your phone run smoothly.

Finding and closing websites

  1. From the Apps screen, tap on the Chrome app icon to open your phone’s web browser. Chrome is installed on all Android phones and looks like a coloured circle.
  2. Find the Tabs icon at the top right. It looks like a small square with a number. The number shows how many websites are open.
  3. Tap the Tabs icon to view a grid of thumbnails. Each thumbnail represents an open website on your phone.
  4. To close one website, swipe the thumbnail sideways or tap the X in the top-right corner of the thumbnail.

To close all open websites at once:

  1. Tap the More menu at the top right of the screen. It looks like three dots.
  2. From the menu that appears, tap Close all tabs.
  3. Tap Close all tabs and groups to confirm.
  4. The Chrome home page will display.
