All about myGov

This short guide is a reference tool to help refresh your knowledge or practise what you have learned in the All about myGov online course, including:

  • what myGov is and how it keeps your information secure
  • how a myGov account can benefit you
  • some of the services you can link to your myGov account.

What is myGov?

myGov gives you a way to organise all your government services and accounts online, securely, with a single login and one password. It also includes an Inbox where you receive important messages from government services.

Learning about myGov

For security purposes, you'll receive an email or text message telling you there's a new notice in your myGov Inbox. To check a new message, you need to log in securely to your myGov account and read the notice there.

To create a myGov account, you'll need:

  • An active email address
  • A mobile phone with an active mobile phone account and number is recommended. This will enable myGov to send security codes via text message to check it's really you trying to log in.

Once the account is set up you can sign in and link services such as Centrelink, Medicare, My Health Record, the ATO, and many more. To do this:

  1. Visit https://my.gov.au
  2. Sign in to your myGov account with your email and password.

Benefits of myGov

The myGov platform may benefit you in several ways:

  • Save time! No more paperwork or needing to queue at offices
  • Get things done securely with a password and special code
  • Safely view your private information and personal details and protect them by signing out securely.
  • Control your own personal information instead of relying on government employees
  • Keep notices and reminders secure in one place in your myGov Inbox
You can use the myGov Code Generator app for extra security. Download it from your mobile device's official app store.

How myGov helps you

After you link a government service to your myGov account, you can access that service and get things done. For example:

1. Centrelink

  • Use your Centrelink Customer Reference Number (CRN)
  • Check the status of a pension claim
  • Manage your pension payments.

2. The Australian Tax Office (ATO)

  • Receive tax notices to your myGov Inbox
  • Get reminders of any payments or refunds due
  • Easily lodge your tax return and automate tasks like claiming pensioner or veteran tax offsets.

3. My Health Record

  • See pathology reports and health information
  • Manage your Advanced Care Plan (if you have one)
  • Appoint Representatives (usually family members) who are allowed to access your health record.

4. Medicare

  • Lodge and process claims online instead of queueing at an office
  • Check which medicines are covered by Medicare
  • See your vaccination record and status.
