Using Google to search a specific website

This short guide is a reference tool to help refresh your knowledge or practise what you have learned in the Using Google to search a specific website online video course.

Step by step

You can use Google to search within a specific website by using the site: method. This can help you find more precise or trusted information. You can perform a basic Google search to get started:

  1. Go to google.com.
  2. Type your question or topic, such as Are Australians getting older?, into the Search bar and press Enter.
  3. From the search results that appear, look for a source that is likely to specialise in your topic. For example, a university or government website, such as the Australian Bureau of Statistics (abs.gov.au), might provide accurate and current information about Australians getting older.
  4. To only see results from that website, clear the results from the previous search by clicking the cross (X) in the right of the Search bar.
  5. Type site: into the Search bar followed by the website address and your search question or topic.
  6. Make sure you do not type a space between site: and the website address. In our example, the search term would look like:
    site:abs.gov.au are Australians getting older?
  7. Press Enter to see a page of search results that come only from the selected website
Searching a specific website
