Welcome to the 'Using Google to search a specific website' video course. In this video, you'll learn how to do a Google search that only shows results from a single website that you choose. This can help give you more precise or trustworthy results. For this demonstration, let's find a site that has specific information about whether Australia's population really is getting older, overall.
From the Google home page at google.com, click in the search bar in the middle of the screen and type 'Are Australians getting older?'. Then click Enter. The results page appears. You might see an AI summary at the top, and then a mix of results from government, universities, and other organisations. One of the results is from the Australian Bureau of Statistics. This should be a good source because it contains official census results without any commentary. You can narrow your search to show only results from abs.gov.au, which is the website of the Australian Bureau of Statistics or ABS.
To do this, go to the search bar at the top of the search results and click the cross on the right to clear the previous search. Now, type in: Site:abs.gov.au are Australians getting older? Be careful not to add a space after typing 'site colon' When you are ready, press Enter. A new page of results will appear and you can see all these results are from the Australian Bureau of Statistics.
You can click any result to visit that page on the ABS website. When it comes to statistics, it's a good idea to pick the most recent result, so you will have the most up-to-date information. For this example, you can see a result titled, 'Historical population 2021'. And under it a date of 16 July, 2024. This will show population age results from the last Australian census, so let's click on that one.
Your browser goes to the ABS website. You can see the address at the top of the page has changed to abs.gov.au, and then the name of the page. On the left of the page, you can see a panel with some links. Click on 'Population age and sex structure'. This shows some interesting statistics about how Australia's population is aging. You can click other links in the left-hand menu to see how this data was gathered. When you are ready to move on, you can try searching other websites that you like or trust using the site: method.
To make a new search, click the browser's Back button at the top left until the Google search bar and the previous page of Google search results reappears. You've learned how to use Google to search a specific site to get Google search results that can be more precise and trustworthy. If you are unsure about any steps, you can rewind the video.
