Welcome to the 'How to filter Google search results' video course. In this video, you'll learn how to do an advanced Google search. This will filter the results of your search to help give you better outcomes. For this demonstration, we'll look for information about budgies. From the Google home page at google.com, click in the search bar in the middle of the screen.
Now, type in budgie and press Enter. The search results page will appear. At the top under the search bar is a row of filters. The All filter is selected by default, which means Google is showing everything about budgies. Instead of just a list of results, you can see different panels. On the left of the screen, you can see Google has changed the search to Budgerigar, which is the full name of the bird. You can see some pictures at the top of the panel and an information summary about the bird. If you scroll the page, you can see some video results about budgies, then some budgie-related websites and some other search suggestions where you can get more information. You can click on any part of these search results to see more, but for now, let's filter the results to show only videos about budgies.
To see videos of budgies, scroll up to the row of filters at the top of the page and click on Videos. The search results page changes to show links to videos only. You can click on any video to view it in your browser. You may need to watch a short ad before you can see the video. After five seconds, a Skip button might appear in the bottom right of the video. You can click this to skip the rest of the ad.
To return to your original search results, click the Back button at the top left of the page. It looks like an arrow pointing left. At the top of the search results under the search bar, click the Shopping filter. The page changes to show results for things you can buy. You may notice these results include budgie-themed toys, decor, and food. For this demonstration, we want shopping results that show how to keep a budgie and what's involved. Click in the search bar, and next to the current search term, type in 'advice', so the search term now reads 'budgie advice'. Then press Enter.
Now, the shopping results will show books about keeping budgies. There are also some American books which call the bird a parakeet. You can click on any result to go to the online shop that sells the book, but for now, we will start a search for some news articles about budgies. To get back to Google search, type google.com into the address bar of your browser. Online shops might offer a discount if you provide them with your email address. It's safest to ignore this, as giving your email address might mean you get spam or other unwanted advertising.
To search for news articles about budgies, type 'budgie' into the search bar and press Enter. At the top of the page, you'll see an AI Overview followed by different panels of information on the right and a list of results. An AI Overview is a quick summary of a topic or question. This does not always appear and is an experimental feature, so results may not be accurate. Be careful to check results against other sources. There might already be some news articles about budgies in the search results that appear, but you can use the News filter to see more.
At the top of the page under the search bar, click on More. From the drop-down options that appear, click on News. The search results will change to only show articles from online news sites. Each result also shows the date so you can see how recent the news is. You can experiment using a mix of search terms and search filters to get results that are most useful to you. Google search works best when you use short phrases or single sentences. Too much detail might not provide the results you're looking for.
The good news is that searching is free, so you can keep experimenting until you get the results you want. You've learned how to use search filters to make your Google searches more specific and useful. If you're unsure about any steps, you can rewind the video or click the chapter headings to jump to the start of a chapter. If you're ready to move on, there are many other courses to explore on Be Connected.
