Using the Home button on an Android phone

This short guide is a reference tool to help refresh your knowledge or practise what you have learned in the Using the Home button on an Android phone online video course.

About the Home button

The Home button opens the Home screen, which is the main place for accessing apps and features on your phone. If you ever feel unsure where you are, the Home button is the fastest way to return to your starting point.

You can use the Home button any time your phone is unlocked, whether you’re in an app or website, checking a message, or on a phone call.

Using the Home button

There are two types of Home button, depending on your Android phone model.

  1. Virtual button. Look for three icons at the bottom of the screen. The middle button is the Home button and looks like a small circle or a square with rounded corners. Tap on it to open the Home screen.
  2. Navigation bar. Put your finger on the bar at the bottom of the screen, then swipe up to open the Home screen.
On many Android models, you can change how you access the Home button via the Settings app.
