Welcome to the 'Using the Home button on an Android phone' video course. In this video, you'll learn where to find and how to use the Home button on an Android phone. The steps will be similar on an Android tablet.
The Home button opens the Home screen, which is the main place for accessing apps and other features. If you ever feel stuck or unsure how to return to your starting point, the Home button is the quickest way back to your Home screen. You can use it any time your phone is unlocked, whether you're in an app or web page or on a call.
Depending on your Android phone model, you access the Home button by tapping a button or swiping up on the screen. On most Android phones, the Home button is not a physical button, but a virtual button that looks like an icon. It is positioned at the bottom centre of the screen and looks like a small circle, or a square with rounded corners.
Tap on it to open the Home screen. The app you are using will be paused and sent to the background, so you can pick up where you left off later. If you see a navigation bar at the bottom centre of the screen instead, you access the Home button using a swipe gesture.
Put your finger on the bar and swipe up to open the Home screen. On most Android models, you can use the Settings app to choose how to access the Home button.
