This short guide is a reference tool to help refresh your knowledge or practice what you have learned in the Making a Medicare claim using the myGov app online video course, including how to:
- prepare for a claim
- upload documents for your claim
- finalise and submit your claim.
Getting started with the myGov app
Before making a Medicare claim with the myGov app, ensure you have:
- a myGov account set up
- a myGov PIN
- your myGov account linked to your Medicare account
- your Medicare card details.
Preparing a claim
The following steps show how to claim a Medicare rebate for a medical service that has been paid. The example uses an Android phone, and the steps will be similar on an iPhone.
To begin:
- From your phone’s Apps screen, tap on the myGov icon to open the app.
- On the Welcome back screen, tap the Continue button.
- Enter your myGov PIN to sign in an open the myGov Home screen.
- Tap the Services icon at the bottom right of the screen.
- From the list of linked services that appear, tap Medicare.
- From the options that appear, tap Make a Medicare claim.
- The app will guide you through the claim process, starting with the information you should have ready, such as an invoice and proof and payment. Tap Start.
- An Important notice will appear; tap Accept to continue.
- The app will ask questions about your claim. Answer by tapping No, then Next to move on to the following screen.
- The names of people listed on your Medicare card will appear. Tap on your name, then Next.
- The app will ask if the service has been paid for and if you have proof of payment. Tap Yes, Yes and then Next.
Avoid pressing the Back button during the claim process, as this may return you to the Home screen and you will need to restart the claim.
Uploading a document
- Read the requirements for uploading proof-of-payment documents and tap Upload a document when you’re ready to start.
- If the app asks permission to take a photo, tap While using the app.
- A pop up will display: select the Files, Photos or Gallery app icon to upload a document that is saved to your phone, and the Camera icon if you need to photograph a paper document.
- For a paper document, use your phone’s camera to capture the document, making sure it’s flat and within the frame.
- Once you’ve taken the photo, tap OK to upload it.
- If the photo is unclear, tap Retry to retake it and, when you’re satisfied, tap OK.
- After uploading, you can add more documents, delete the uploaded document, or tap Next to continue.
Finalising your claim
- From your proof-of-payment document, find and enter the provider number and tap Next.
- From your proof-of-payment document, enter the item number, the date of the service, and the amount you paid.
- A screen may show details of the item number; swipe to review and ensure it matches your service. Tap Next.
- If the item number didn’t include the options listed on this screen, tap No and Next again.
- Review the claim summary and ensure all details are correct. Tap Edit if any information needs updating.
- When ready, tap Submit.
- A confirmation screen will acknowledge your claim submission and provide a Claim ID for future reference.
- Tap Download claim summary to save or print a PDF of your claim.
- Return to the Medicare Home screen by tapping the Home button at the bottom of the screen.
Double-check all the information before submitting to ensure your claim is processed correctly and without delays.
