What's coming up?

In this activity, you'll learn how your iPhone comes with apps pre-installed by Apple, which means they are ready to use as soon as you finish setting up your device.

This course focuses on iPhone, but the iPad includes a similar set of apps. They might look slightly different or have different features, but you should still be able to follow along on your iPad.

Your iPhone comes with apps

When you purchase a new or used iPhone, it comes with a set of apps designed by Apple to get you started, and to help you take advantage of your iPhone's features. Apple calls these built-in apps.

Built-in apps are already installed

Usually, apps need to be downloaded and installed from the App Store before you can use them. But the built-in apps are already on your iPhone and ready to use as soon as you finish setting up your device.

How to find the built-in apps

The built-in apps have icons on the iPhone's Home screen. You can tap any icon to launch that app.

Depending on your iPhone model, you may need to swipe left on the Home screen to see more of the built-in apps.

The iPad has different operating software to the iPhone, and as well as icons on the Home screen, there are icons in the dock at the bottom of the screen. The iPad also has a different set of built-in apps, and some may appear on the dock rather than the Home screen.

How to check an app is up to date

To check apps yourself:

  1. Open the App Store by tapping its icon on the Home screen.
  2. Search for the app you want to update, e.g., Safari.
  3. Tap Safari in the search results to open its App Store page. If an update is available, you'll see an Update button at the top of the screen.
  4. Tap Update and your iPhone will install the latest version of the app.

If you can only see an Open button, that means the app is already up to date and you don't need to do anything.

Advantages of using the built-in apps

Your iPhone's built-in apps are kept up to date by Apple and are used by millions of iPhone users around the world. They are reliable and safe to use, and there's lots of information available online about how to use them.
