Welcome to the 'Setting up the Medicare Express Plus app' video course. In this video, you'll learn how to start using the Medicare app and how to sign in so that it shows your information. This demonstration uses the app on an Android phone, and the steps will be similar on an iPhone.
To use the Medicare app, you must have a myGov account set up. You must have also linked your myGov account to Medicare using the myGov website. To set up the Medicare app, you'll need to enter the username and password for your myGov account, so make sure you have them ready nearby. For your security, the Medicare app will send a code to your mobile phone during the setup process. Make sure you have mobile phone reception where you are to receive this code.
In this demonstration, we've already set up our myGov account and linked it to Medicare, so we're ready to start setting up the Medicare app. To start, swipe up on the Home screen to view the Apps screen. Tap the Medicare icon to open the app.
The first time you open the app, you'll see a special Welcome screen. You can read the Welcome screen to see some of the things you can do in the app. Tap next at the bottom of the screen to continue. This screen reminds you of the things you need to use the app. This includes having your myGov account linked to Medicare, connecting this app to your myGov account, and creating or using a myGov PIN. Steps two and three on this screen can be done in the app, and we'll get to those in a moment. For now, tap Finish at the bottom of the screen. You'll see a Sign in screen. Tap the green Sign in button at the bottom to start setting up the app.
The next screen displays some terms of use. Once you've read them and are ready to proceed, tap I agree at the bottom of the screen. If there's anything in the terms of use that makes you uncomfortable, or that you don't agree with, you can close the app now. The app is not connected to your myGov or Medicare details yet, and it's safe to delete it from your device. Now it's time to sign into the app using your myGov account details. Tap the blue Sign in with myGov button. Tap in the box at the top to open the keyboard. Type in your myGov username and password, and then tap Sign in.
For your security, myGov will send a code to your mobile phone as a text message. When you receive the code, type it into the box and tap next. You only have to do this once while you set up the app. The app will remember your myGov details, so you won't have to sign in with your username and password each time. Instead, you can sign in using a myGov PIN or personal identification number. If you have already set up a myGov PIN on the myGov website, the app will ask you to enter it now. If you don't have one, follow the instructions on the screen to choose a secure myGov PIN. Then tap Next. Then enter the PIN again and tap Confirm. When choosing a PIN, avoid any numbers that might be obvious, such as your date of birth. Choose a PIN that's easy for you to remember, but hard for others to guess.
The app's main screen now appears, but let's have a quick look at how signing in next time will work by using your myGov PIN. Press the Back button. A pop up will ask if you want to logout. Tap Yes. This securely signs you out of the Medicare app. You'll see a Welcome back screen that shows your first name. Tap the green button at the bottom of the screen that asks you to sign in as yourself. This button should show your first name too. The next screen asks you to enter your myGov PIN. Tap each number into one of the boxes and then tap Sign in. The Medicare app main screen now appears and the app is ready to use.
You've learned how to set up the Medicare app and sign into it securely using your myGov PIN. If you're unsure about any steps, you can rewind the video. If you're ready to move on, there are many other courses to explore on Be Connected.
