Making a payment

There are a few safe payment options you can choose from when shopping online.

On most shopping websites, you will need a credit or debit card to make a payment. Many sites also offer other payment methods, such as PayPal.

The site address should also change from http to https. This tells you that the communication between you and the seller is confidential and secure. When using Internet Explorer, secure sites will also have a small padlock symbol in the address bar.

Other browsers, like Firefox, have different ways of identifying a secure site, but all browsers use the https in the address bar.

Safe and secure

You can tell a website is secure if the site address starts with https.

False

No, that's not correct. If the web address starts with https it's an indication that the website is secure.

Other options

Lots of shopping websites use a payment method called PayPal.

PayPal is a safe and easy way to pay online. It allows you to send and receive money online without giving the seller your financial details.

If you need a refund for any reason, a seller can easily send money back to your PayPal account.

When you set up a PayPal account, you can choose to pay by credit card, debit card or direct transfer from your bank account.

Now let's see how to pay for a book online.

The next slide includes some steps to try yourself. Select the Continue button below to begin and then follow the instructions on the right-hand side of the screen.

This is an interactive activity that allows learners to practise paying online. This activity has no sound track and is made up of a number of images and text instructions with opportunities for the user to enter text or click on links as part of the exercise to practise paying online.

This is to encourage confidence using the internet by practising a simple exercise in a simulated environment.

If a mistake is made during this exercise, there will be a prompt to ask you to try it again. If another mistake is made, the video will show you how to complete that section of the exercise.

Congratulations!

Well done, you've come to the end of the Shopping online payment methods activity.
