Welcome to the How to Make a Claim Using the Medicare Express Plus App video course. In this video, you'll learn how to claim a Medicare refund using the Medicare app. To make a claim, you must have already set up your Medicare app and have a myGov PIN ready to sign in. In our example, we'll be claiming a rebate for a recent bone density scan. This demonstration uses the app on an Android phone and the steps will be similar on an iPhone.
To begin, open the Medicare app by tapping its icon on your phone's app screen. You will see the welcome back screen and your first name. Tap on the green button that asks you to sign in. Now enter your myGov PIN in the boxes and tap Sign In when you are ready. Under claims, tap the green Make a Claim button. This app will guide you through the steps for making a claim, starting with the documents you should have ready. This includes an invoice for the service received and proof of payment. When you're ready, tap Start. An important notice Pop-up will warn about penalties for providing false information, tap Accept to indicate that you understand and to continue to the next step.
The following few screens ask questions about your claim. If you haven't already received a benefit, tap No, then tap Next. A list of people on your Medicare card appears, the app already knows this because you are signed in. Tap on your name, then tap Next. As you've already paid for the service, tap on Yes. And tap Yes again, if you have proof of payment. A message will appear reminding you that you need to upload your proof of payment document. And you can tap Next to continue. Be careful not to tap the Back button on your phone while making a claim in the Medicare app, as it will return you to the home page, and you will need to restart the claim process.
The app provides some instructions for uploading documents. If it's a printed document, you should separate the pages and remove staples before uploading the pages separately. If the document is saved to your phone, they should be one of the file types listed, and under the five megabyte size limit. When you're ready, tap Upload a Document. A file chooser pop-up appears at the bottom of the screen, you can select the Media Picker app if your document is saved to your phone, or the Camera app. If you need to photograph a paper document. We have a paper document, so for this demonstration we'll tap Camera.
The Camera app will open on your phone, place the document on a flat surface and position it squarely within the frame. Take care not to bump your phone's Home or Back button, as you may need to start over. Tap the Capture button to take a photo. A preview of the photographed document will appear. If it's blurry, dark, or otherwise hard to read, your claim might be rejected. If you need to retake the photo, tap Retry to take a better quality photo. When you're satisfied, tap Okay. The app will take a moment to check the photo, and when it's been uploaded successfully, you'll see the document name under Uploaded Documents. If you change your mind about including this document, tap Remove. If you need to upload more proof, tap Upload Another Document. If you don't have any other documents to upload, scroll down and tap Next.
Now, you need to enter the provider number for your health practitioner, which will be near their name on your proof of payment document. Tap in the field to display the keyboard to enter the number, then tap Next. All health services are assigned an item number under Medicare, and this will be listed on your proof of payment. Tap in this field at the top of the screen to display the keyboard and enter the item number, then enter the date of the service. Lastly, enter the amounts you paid for the service and tap Next. A screen may appear describing the item number, you may need to swipe across the screen to see the details. If it matches the service you received, tap Next to continue.
Our item number didn't include admitted patient, inpatient, H, or asterisks, so let's tap No, then Next. The app will display a summary of the information you've provided, including the bank account into which your refund will be deposited. Scroll down the page to check the information, and tap the Edit button near each section if you need to change anything. When you're satisfied, all the information is correct, tap Submit. The app will confirm that your claim has been sent for processing, and provide a claim ID number for your records. Or if you need to follow up on anything, you can also tap the Download Claim Summary to print share, or save a PDF summary to your phone. Tap the back arrow to return to the summary screen, then tap the close button marked by an X in the top right to return to the home page.
