Welcome to 'Beyond Google Earth'. Google Earth contains a lot more than just maps. In this video, we're going to use the Chrome browser to take a quiz with Google Earth Voyager, and show how you can broaden your cultural horizons with Google Arts & Culture. While the steps in this video will look a little different on a mobile device, don't worry. You should still be able to follow along. Let's test your knowledge by taking a quiz with Google Earth Voyager.
To start, type earth.google.com into your web browser. When the page loads, click the Launch Earth button and a virtual globe will appear. From the menu on the left, look for the Voyager icon, which looks like a ship's helm. Click it.
Next, click Games. Then, scroll until you find a quiz. Quizzes will have the word Quiz at the start of their title, so that you can easily locate them. Click Quiz: Global National Parks to open the quiz. Now click on the Let's Go button to start. A question appears on the right. Do you know which of the following was the world's first national park? Click Yellowstone National Park and watch as the map zooms in on its location. A correct answer is highlighted with a green tick. We did it! When you're ready, click Next at the bottom right. For Question 2, let's click Option B, Lion. Uh-oh, looks like that answer was incorrect. An incorrect answer is marked with a red cross. If you answer incorrectly, don't worry. The quiz will show the correct answer and some more information. The map on the left will zoom in to show an image about the answer. You can click the image above the question to see a larger view, then click the cross at the top right to return to the quiz. With your mouse, click and drag the image on the left to look around. You can explore the location before moving on to the next question. When you're ready, click Next. Next question, thinking caps on. Let's click Option C. Correct! Click Next.
For this question, click Option B, Galapagos National Park. Continue answering the questions until you reach the end of the quiz. Then click Score to see how you did. Can you get all nine correct? Now, let's make a visit to Google Arts & Culture. It's a separate website to Google Earth, but they are closely linked. Here's how to move easily between the two. Click the Voyager icon in the menu on the left and scroll back up to the top. Because Voyager is part of the Google Earth website, you will see the Google Earth icon in the open browser tab. As we're going on a cultural voyage, find Culture in the row of Voyager topic categories and click on it. Now scroll down the page. With so many choices, it can be hard to tell which Voyages are linked to Google Arts & Culture, but sometimes it's obvious.
Some Voyager titles show Google Arts & Culture below their name, which tells you that the Voyage takes place on that website. Click on The Bauhaus and the World, Google Arts & Culture. When the page opens, click on Let's Go and wait for the map to zoom in. Away we go! This is the location for the Bauhaus school in Germany. From the information card, click Read More. You are taken to a page on the Google Arts & Culture website. This opens in a new tab next to the Voyager tab in your browser. Scroll down to see more about the Bauhaus. When you're finished, you can click the Google Earth tab in your browser to leave Google Arts & Culture and return to The Bauhaus Voyager slideshow, or start a completely new voyage!
