Welcome to the 'Using the Side button on an iPhone' video course. In this video, you'll learn where to find the Side button on your phone and how to use it to turn your phone on or off, wake the screen and take a screenshot. You can also make an emergency call and activate Siri, the digital assistant. The steps in this video will be similar on an iPad.
On most iPhone models, the Side button is located on the right edge of your device. It is sometimes called the Power button. Depending on your iPhone model, the Side button can do several things. If the screen is on, a short single press will turn it off again and lock your phone, if you have a screen lock set up.
If the screen is off, press the Side button once quickly to wake it. You can press and hold the Side button and the volume down button to open the Power menu. Put your finger on the 'slide to power off' button and move it to the right to turn off your phone.
To turn your phone back on, press and hold the Side button for a few seconds. The phone will restart and show the Apple icon followed by the Lock screen. To take a shot of what you see on your phone screen, hold the Side button and the volume up button for around a second. The screen will flash, and if the sound on your phone is on, you'll hear a camera shutter sound. The screenshot you've captured will be saved to the Photos app on your device.
If pressing the Side button doesn't do what you expect, you may be able to customise it in your phone Settings app. On many iPhone models, the Side button allows you to call emergency services without having to open an app or use the keypad. This is useful when you're in trouble and can't make a call and can save time when help is needed urgently.
You can use the Side button to call 000 at any time, even when the phone is locked. To do this, press the Side button five times quickly. After a short countdown, your phone will automatically call emergency services.
Depending on your iPhone model, you can press and hold the Side button to open Siri, the phone's digital assistant. If you have set up Siri on your phone, this can help you send messages, set timers, search the web and more just by speaking into your phone. "Hey, Siri, set a timer for 10 minutes."
