Welcome to the 'How to scan a QR code with an iPhone' video course. In this video, you'll learn how to safely scan QR codes so you can quickly and conveniently open websites, get eScripts, check in at venues, and more.
QR codes are usually safe to use and don't collect your personal information. But for your security, only scan QR codes from trusted sources. You should also avoid codes on stickers placed over signs or posters. They may be scam codes covering legitimate codes.
Most iPhones have QR scanning turned on by default. To check, open the Settings app from the Home screen. Scroll down to Camera and tap on it. Scroll the options and check that Scan QR Codes is turned on. If it's not, tap the switch to enable it. Now let's try scanning a QR code. Swipe up to return to the Home screen, then find the Camera app and tap on it to open the camera. Make sure you're using the rear-facing camera and hold your iPhone so that the QR code is clearly visible in the frame.
You don't need to tap or take a photo. Just point your camera steadily at the code for a second or two. After a moment, your phone will recognise the QR code and show a notification banner on the screen. The banner will show a preview of the link or action, such as joining a Wi-Fi network, downloading an app, or, for this demonstration, opening a website. If a notification banner doesn't appear when you scan a QR code, try moving the camera closer and check that it's parallel to the code, not tilted.
You can also increase the brightness on your phone or clean the camera lens. Before tapping a link, always take a moment to check that it looks legitimate. Tap the QR code icon to the right of the banner to see a panel with more information. A safe link will show https in the address and should match the name of the business or website you're expecting. Once you're satisfied, you can tap Open in Safari to open the website in your browser.
