Welcome to the 'How to scan a QR code with your Android phone' video course. In this video, you'll learn how to safely scan QR codes so you can quickly and conveniently open websites, get e-scripts, check in at venues and more. QR codes are usually safe to use, and don't collect your personal information, but for your security, only scan QR codes from trusted sources.
You should also avoid codes on stickers placed over signs or posters. They may be scam codes covering legitimate codes. Most Android phones have QR scanning turned on by default. To check, open the Camera app. Then tap the More menu on the right. It looks like four dots. From the row of options that appears, tap the Settings icon, which looks like a cog wheel.
The Camera Settings menu will open. At the top, check that Scan QR codes is turned on. If it's not, tap the switch to enable it. Tap the black arrow at the top left to return to the Camera app. Now let's try scanning a QR code. With the Camera app still open, make sure you're using the rear-facing camera and point it steadily at the QR code. You don't need to tap or take a photo. Just hold the phone so the code is clearly visible in the frame. After a moment, your phone will recognise the QR code and display a pop-up notification.
The pop up will show a preview of the link or action, such as joining a Wi-Fi network, downloading an app, or for this demonstration, opening a website. If a pop up or link doesn't appear when you scan a QR code, try moving the camera closer and check that it's parallel to the code, not tilted. You can also increase the brightness on your phone or clean the camera lens.
Before tapping a pop up or link from a QR code, be sure to check that it looks legitimate. Tap the arrow on the right of the pop up to see a panel with more information. A safe link will use https in the address and match the name of the business or website you're expecting. Once you're satisfied, you can tap 'Open link' to open the website in your browser.
