Welcome to the 'Closing unused apps on an iPhone' video course. In this video, you'll learn how to find the apps that are open on your iPhone, and how to close them. The steps will be similar on an iPad.
The apps you use stay running in the background, even after you move to another one. Closing unused apps can help your phone run smoothly and save battery. You can find and close apps anytime your phone is unlocked, whether you're in an app or web page, checking your messages, or making a call.
On an iPhone with a physical Home button, you can find your open apps by double-pressing the Home button. On other iPhone models, start with your finger at the bottom of the screen and swipe up slowly without removing your finger from the surface. Then pause in the centre of the screen. A carousel of app preview cards appears.
Each card shows the last screen you viewed in that app. Swipe left or right to find the app you want. Then swipe upwards to close it. Repeat the steps for any other apps you want to close, or you can tap on a card to open the app.
When you finish closing apps, swipe up from the bottom of the screen, or tap anywhere outside the cards to return to your Home screen.
