Welcome to the 'How to use Gemini on your Android phone' video course. In this video, you'll learn how to switch on Gemini and use it to make a phone call. The Gemini digital assistant lets you perform many tasks on your phone just by speaking to it. You can ask it to send messages, set timers, search the web, and more. If you find typing or searching through menus difficult, Gemini can make it easier to use your phone. You can use it any time, even when your screen is off.
This demonstration uses a Samsung phone, and the steps will be similar on other Android models. From the Apps screen, tap the Settings app. Scroll the menu to find Google and tap on it. From the Google services screen, tap the All services button at the top right. Then find Search, Assistant and Voice in the menu, and tap on it. On the next screen, find Gemini and tap it.
If Google Assistant is currently set as your phone's digital assistant, you'll be prompted to change to Gemini now. Tap Switch. A pop up may appear with information about what Gemini can do. Tap More to see all the information, then tap Use Gemini to open the Gemini settings menu.
Now, let's set up speech recognition on Gemini so that you can do things on your phone without using your hands. Scroll the menu, tap Google Assistant features in Gemini, then on the next screen, tap "Hey Google" and Voice Match. At the top of the screen, make sure This device is selected. Below it, Hey Google allows Gemini to start listening when you say the phrase, 'Hey Google' or 'OK Google'. Tap the switch to turn it on.
The following screen provides more information about using 'Hey Google'. Tap More to read the information, and once you're satisfied, tap I agree. The next screen provides information about Voice Match, which allows Gemini to recognise your voice. Again, tap More to read the information and, when you're ready to proceed, tap I agree.
The next few steps help train Hey Google to know your voice. Answer the instructions by talking clearly and naturally. Hey Google, help me write a thank you note. Hey Google, what's the weather tomorrow? OK Google, explain how a rainbow is formed. OK Google, set a timer for 5 minutes. When you're done, tap the Next button at the bottom right. Hey Google is now switched on and Gemini is ready to use. Let's press the Home button to do this from the Home screen.
To test Gemini, you can ask it to do something, like set a timer, or make a phone call. 'Hey Google, call Sigrid.' You can tell Gemini is listening when a pop up with a microphone appears at the bottom of the screen. Once Gemini has found the contact you want to phone, it will start the call. You can stop Gemini by either tapping the screen or waiting for it to finish.
Try experimenting with Gemini to see what else it can do. 'Hey Google. What's the temperature in Delhi right now?' Gemini only listens when prompted and may share recorded conversations with Google. If you're concerned, you can turn Gemini off at any time.
