Welcome to the 'How to exclude results from Google search' video course. In this video, you'll learn how to do a Google search that avoids showing results you don't want to see, such as results from a particular city. This can help give you more precise or useful search results.
As an example, let's search for the best parks in Australia's capital cities. From the Google home page at google.com, click in the search bar in the middle of the screen and type 'Australian capital city best park'. Now, press Enter.
A page of search results will appear. But there's a problem. All the top results are for parks in Canberra. This is because Google thinks you are asking for the best parks in Australia's capital city, which is Canberra. You can fix this by excluding Canberra from your search results. You can exclude a word from your search by using a minus sign. Let's do that now.
Click in the search bar at the top of the search results. Next to 'Australian capital city best park', type in a minus sign and the word Canberra. Be careful not to add a space between the minus sign and the word Canberra. When you're ready, press Enter. A new page of search results will appear, this time with much more variety. The results you see may be related to where you live. For example, if you live near Sydney, many of the results will be for Sydney parks. If you live near Melbourne, there may be more results from Victoria. You might also see recommendations from travel websites and government sites such as national parks.
You've learned how to exclude results to get Google search results that are more precise and may be more relevant or useful. If you're unsure about any steps, you can rewind the video. If you're ready to move on, there are many other courses to explore on Be Connected.
