Keeping a virtual scrapbook

What's coming up?

In this activity, you’ll learn some tips for organising all the research, information, website addresses, video links and more, in a virtual scrapbook for your planned trip.

You can save it to a folder on your computer or mobile device, or back it up to the cloud so you can access it when travelling anywhere you have an internet connection.

So much information

Once you’ve spent a couple of days searching the web for trip ideas, itineraries and more, you’ll end up with loads of information!

One way to keep it all organised is to save this information as you go.

Using web browser bookmarks

You can use your web browser’s Bookmark feature to save any web address you have visited. This can be a website’s home page, or a specific video on YouTube, or any page on the internet you visit.

In our example, we’re using the Chrome web browser, but if you use a different browser, it uses bookmarks in the same way.

When you want to bookmark a webpage, click on the star on the far right of the search bar. A Bookmark added pop-up will appear. You can choose to save the bookmark to a specific folder. Click on the folder option to create a new folder, such as My Trip.

You can find out more about using bookmarks in Chrome, Edge and Safari in the Understanding web browsers course.

Saving PDFs

Some searches will end with an option to view or download a portable document file, or PDF.

You can create a folder on your computer or mobile device in which to save these PDFs.

You can learn more about PDFs in the Downloading and saving documents course.

You can also find out how to save a PDF to your mobile device in the Saving and sharing files videos for Apple iPhone and Android phone.

Back up your folder to the cloud

You can also back up your My Trip folder to the cloud, so you can access it from any device with an internet connection.

You can find out more about the cloud and how it stores your folders and files for easy access in the What is the cloud? course.

You can do all of this with your mobile too!

You can bookmark, save, and back up files, websites, PDFs and more, using your mobile phone and tablet. It works a little bit differently than to your computer, but it’s basically the same. You can find out how to back up files to the cloud in the Cloud backup and sharing videos for Apple iPhone, Apple iPad, and Android mobile phones and Android tablets.

Using free accounts on travel sites

Sites such as TripAdvisor and Lonely Planet offer the option to create a free account to help you plan a trip. These sites have lots of powerful tools for researching and planning a trip, that are worth exploring. You can save your searches, pin reviews, plot routes and more.

However, it’s important to remember that these sites will offer your information to advertisers, so make sure you are comfortable with giving them your personal information before creating the account.

Well done!

This is the end of the Keeping a virtual scrapbook activity.

Next up, if you have registered and are logged into the Be Connected website, you'll now be able to take a short quiz to finish the course. If you're not registered, you are now at the end of the Researching travel online course.
