Welcome to the 'Introduction to the myGov app' video course. In this video, you'll learn what the myGov app does, how to install it on your mobile phone or tablet, and how to set it up so you can access your myGov account.
To use the myGov app, you must have a myGov account set up. To sign in to the myGov app, you'll need to enter the username or email address for your myGov account, plus its password, so make sure you have them ready. For your security, the myGov app will send a code to your mobile phone during the setup process. Make sure you have mobile phone reception where you are to receive this code. This demonstration uses the app on an Android phone, and the steps will be similar on an iPhone.
The myGov app is a secure way to access Australian government services in one place. You can use the app to sign in securely without needing to visit multiple websites, get notifications when something needs your attention, read messages and letters from government services, and access linked services like Centrelink, Medicare, and the ATO. The myGov app is free to download, and you can get it from your device's official app store. When you download an app for your mobile device, it's always safest to use the official app store. Let's download the myGov app to our Android phone from the Play Store.
From the Home screen, find the Play Store icon, and tap it to open the app. The screen will show apps recommended by Google Play and ads for apps. To find the myGov app, tap the magnifying glass icon at the bottom right to begin a search. A search bar will display at the top of the screen and the keyboard will pop up. Tap in the Search bar, then start typing 'myGov app'. Some suggestions will appear below the Search bar, and you can tap on the one that's a match. The myGov app page will appear, along with some details about the app. Check that the developer of the app is Services Australia. This means it's the official government app for using myGov on your mobile device. Tap the Install button to download the app. When the download is finished, you will see the Open button appear on the screen, and you can tap it now to open the myGov app.
If you don't want to open the MyGov app right away, you can instead tap the Home button to return to the Home screen. Whenever you're ready to open the app, swipe up from the bottom of the Home screen to view the Apps screen. The myGov app will be the last icon on the screen. You might need to swipe the screen to the left to see it. Tap on the icon to open the myGov app. The Welcome screen will appear and you can tap the Sign in button to start setting up the app.
The next screen displays some terms of use. Once you've read them and are ready to proceed, tap I agree at the bottom of the screen. If there's anything in the terms of use that makes you uncomfortable or that you don't agree with, you can close the app now. The app is not connected to your myGov details yet, and it's safe to delete it from your device. You can start using the myGov app by signing in with a Digital ID or passkey if you have set them up.
For this demonstration, we'll use our myGov sign-in details, such as a username or email address. Tap Use myGov details. Tap in the box at the top to open the keyboard. Type in your myGov username or email, then type your password. Tap Sign in. For security, myGov will send a code to your mobile phone as a text message. When you receive the code, type it into the box and tap Next. Now, it's time to create a PIN to secure your account. Use the number pad to enter a six-digit PIN, then enter the PIN again to confirm it. The app will remember your PIN so you won't have to sign in with your username and password each time you use the app.
When choosing a PIN, avoid any numbers that might be obvious, such as your date of birth. Choose a PIN that's easy for you to remember, but hard for others to guess. Once you've signed in, the myGov app will display some options. You can set these up later, so tap on Not now, Not now, and Skip. The Home screen will appear, and you can explore this in another course. For now, let's have look at how signing in next time will work by using your myGov PIN.
The first step is to sign out of the app, and you can do this from Account settings. Find the profile icon at the top right of the screen and tap on it to open your Account settings. At the bottom of the menu that appears, tap the Sign out button to end your session with myGov. Next, you'll see a Welcome back screen that shows your first name. Tap the Continue button at the bottom. Now, use the number pad to enter your myGov PIN.
The Home screen now appears, and the app is ready to use. You've learned how to safely download the myGov app and sign in to it securely with your myGov username and PIN. If you're unsure about any steps, you can rewind the video.
