Welcome to the 'Creating a Google passkey' video course. Passkeys are a safe and convenient way to sign in to your devices and online accounts without having to remember lots of passwords. In this demonstration, you'll learn how to set up a passkey for your Google Account on an Android phone. This lets you quickly log into apps and websites in the same way that you unlock your phone.
First, you must be signed in to your Google Account and your phone must be secured with a screen unlock, such as a PIN, fingerprint or facial recognition. Fingerprint and facial unlock are safer unlock screen options, as they can't be copied or forgotten like a PIN.
To start creating a Google passkey, find the Google app on your phone. It should be on the Apps screen in the Google folder. Tap on the folder, then find the app icon which looks like the letter G. Tap on it. When the Google app has loaded, tap your profile icon on the top right of the screen. From the menu that appears, tap Manage your Google Account, which is right under your name and email address. A new menu appears. Find and tap 'Security and sign-in'. It should be near the top.
The 'Security and sign-in' menu appears. Look down the menu for 'Passkeys and security keys'. Below it you should see 'Start using passkeys'. Tap on it. Your phone will ask to verify that it's you. In this demonstration, we're using our fingerprint to confirm our identity. The Passkeys screen appears. If you've never set up a passkey for your Google Account, there will be some information about passkeys. There will also be a blue 'Use passkeys' button. Tap it to set up a passkey for your Google Account.
Your phone will show a screen explaining that a passkey is now set up and some information about using it. Tap Done. The passkey screen will reappear. Tap the back arrow at the top left to return to the 'Security and sign-in' screen. Now scroll down to 'Your devices'. Here you can see a list of other devices using your Google Account.
Your new passkey can automatically synchronise to these devices when you use the Chrome browser. This helps make it quick and simple to access any of your online accounts that use a passkey. All you need to do is use the security you've already set up on the device – a PIN, a fingerprint, or facial scan – to sign in. Depending on your settings, your Android device may automatically create a Google Account passkey and convert your saved Chrome passwords into passkeys.
