When and how to double click
When using our computers, we sometimes need to single click an object, but at other times we need to use a double click (clicking the left mouse button twice, quickly).
In this course, we look at where a single or double click should be used, and how to perform a double click itself.
Below you will find three different ways to learn about double clicking. You can:
- Watch it: A short animation demonstrating the difference between single and double clicking, and how to double click your mouse.
- Try it: For laptop and desktop computers only. An interactive challenge for you to practise single and double clicking.
- Read it: Read the steps in our handy guide that you can print or save for later. Available in different languages in the Print the guide section at the bottom of this page.

A single click is when you left click once with the mouse. To open a link on a web page, you can single click it. When using email, you can single click any link or button.
To do other actions on your computer, you will need to double click. A double click is when you left click the mouse twice quickly.
On your computer screen, you might see some icons. Icons are small, clickable images that represent computer programs. To open a program, you double click its icon.
To open a folder or file, you also double click on it.
If you are unsure, start with a single click. If nothing happens, then try a double click.
Try it
For desktop and laptop computers only. Try it for yourself in a safe practice environment.
